This is an important lesson for all conservative movements fighting to restore western values and classical liberal ideals: leaders must deliver. If a conservative government in power does not realize its mandate, progressive candidates have an opportunity to take power.
Good descriptions of the political players, and that none of them understand their current attitudes and behaviors as "...not so much a slippery slope as a moral cliff-face."
And that the mainstream media have made those attitudes and behaviors acceptable departures from civilization norms.
Excellent analysis. Happy Canadian subscriber here. Should be interesting to see what happens in the UK under Starmer. I worry. Reflecting on my Canadian heritage, I hope we can oust the Trudeau Liberals next year…if not sooner. The calls for his head are now coming from within the house.
The Lib Dems also got fewer votes in 2024 than in 2019. Both Labour and the Lib Dems saw a massive increase in seats because the Tories got less than half their 2019 votes. Tory voters stayed home or switched to there parties, eg Reform. Labour and Lib Dem votes held up in relative terms hence their increased representation.
No mention of British election results is complete without tallying the popular vote:
Labour: 412 seats, 34% popular vote
Conservative: 121 seats, 24% popular vote
Reform: 5 seats, 14% popular vote
LibDems: 71 seats, 12% popular vote
And they have the gall to write "something is rotten in the state of Denmark"
Lucid and spot-on analysis. Thank you!

I had to laugh at the backgrounds of the new Labour MPs - 124 were political staffers, from charities or worked in PR.
More of them had been consultants, trade unionists, civil servants , from higher education or healthcare than from science engineering and technology.
This doesn't give you much confidence about the UK's political class.
