Absorbing this excellent essay should be a red pill exercise for anyone currently thinking that the way out of our current mess, either in the UK or the US, is via old-fashioned “liberal” methods of governing that stress compassion, tolerance, mutual understanding. The younger generation are placing matters more on a war footing, so far only verbal. How the French dealt with Marine Le Pen (lawfare) was just how the Dems in the US dealt with Trump: sick the lawyers on these “threats to democracy.” As the young see their prospects dim, and as they come to realize more and more that the problem is not corruption outside the government, but corruption inside it, a reckoning will come for the ancien regime. That’s where the populism is coming from.

Good summary, Connor. It's depressing to see where Great Britain is today.

I'd like to see you pen a much tougher piece - what specifically is to be done to reverse Britain's decline, and is there anyone on the horizon willing to promote any such changes?
