Well at least the powers that be are talking about how destructive and stupid mass migration is. Just because the countries these migrants come from are hell holes is no reason for western countries to open their doors to all and sundry. How about governments take care of the people they have!
Honest data for a change. The Western countries have gone mad and I cannot understand why. Do they dislike their cultures so much? The understanding when I came to America 50 + years ago was that an immigrant assimilated over time into the values and culture of America. Perhaps 30 or so years ago many Americans (State Governments like CA) started encouraging immigrants to maintain their own identity. The fracturing started then. I watched Sweden trying to be politically correct hiding all the facts of the destruction - rapes, looting, murders - occurring in a certain sector of the capital. The Prime Minister dressed up in Mid East garbs to show her openness. I read today that they are offering a fair bit of money to these immigrants to leave the country.
The elephant in the room is that the vast majority of these unassimilated immigrants are of one religion. This is the Pandora's box that Europe does not want to open and now America too.
I am glad that there is a place still for some honest and civilized conversation.
The open border/asylum for all policy of the Biden Administration is a direct assault on the law abiding people of the United States.... by its own government. They have completely delegitimized themselves. It's that simple. And it's an existential threat to our country.
It's definitely not true that illegal immigrants commit less crimes than US citizens. They commit a crime by entering illegally. Furthermore, State and Federal police and government agencies refuse to keep track or records about the immigration status or ethnicity of accused or convicted criminals. Of if they do keep any records, they steadfastly refuse to release them. It appears the West is committing suicide. If an immigrant enters legally, has a job and earns their own way, then I have no problem. But as this article points out, many illegal immigrants don't work at all, many are given to crime, and even the ones who do work get significant government largesse out of all proportion with whatever contribution they may make. Meanwhile the country's citizens are left to pay the bill, as well as suffering the crimes immigrants commit.
As you pointed out in your article, "Trump’s Vice Presidential Candidate, pointed out, the “Haitians eating cats” headline was the only time mainstream media paid attention to American suburbs struggling with thousands of foreign nationals imposed on them by the federal government. "
Yes we agree!! The Legacy Media is enabler of the immigration problem! I can't think of ONE major problem in our society that isn't enabled by the media. If you can help me (us) out on this please let me know. I'm looking for support from my fellow posters!
I can’t believe Mayorkas is still in post the amount of times I’ve watched him in front of committees, failing to answer any straightforward questions. His arrogance is sickening to the point he looks like he’s devoid of integrity or empathy or any form of humanity.
At least most Americans ’can’ defend themselves with lethal force if needed (not that they should need to) with a legal firearm. UK and for the most part, Europeans cannot…
I challenge all of the people in this conversation (and any other)!!
Doesn't every problem in this discussion owe its continuing existence to failed media and failed free speech?
99% of online media conversations overlook the infrastructure required to support a functional, healthy and safe society-- Unbiased open media, AND functional free speech.
Doesn't this bother you folks??
Please post a significant conversation in social media that doesn't need this infrastructure for resolution!
BTW don't assume that the media can't be fixed...This is "thinking past the sale"
I'll sprinkle this challenge about...I want to see this issue light up!
Would you mind mentioning that Trump prevented the bipartisan border bill from passing Congress? If he wanted a secure border, he would have created one during his first term in office. But where is the wall that he promised Mexico would pay for? He wants an open border so he can divide the country and spread hate, as he expects that will gain him votes. Hopefully, the American voters are too smart to fall for his lies and choose joy and unity instead of hate and division.
Trump, while in office, could doubtless have done a better job, but he was facing major distractions. The failure to pass new immigration legislation (with whatever strengths and weaknesses it had) hardly constitutes an excuse for the wholesale ignoring of laws that are already on the books... a border policy which, as Ayaan ably explains, has produced anything but "joy and unity."
Nonsense at two levels, Steffen. The Border Bill would have normalized illegal immigration in the millions per year - that's just unacceptable, though the gross totals would be lower than the Biden Administration average. And the mechanisms to reduce "excess" immigration were very weak with little real time accountability. Read the bill.
As for the wall, it's a dumb idea, but given manpower on the border it did slow migration for both presidents, though less and less as the cartels routinely started cutting holes in the wall. Do you know each migrant pays thousands of dollars (about $9,000 last time I checked) for "safe passage"? Lastly, much of the "Remain in Mexico" policy was borne by that country, so they did effectively pay real money for their free passage policy, even if they didn't write checks to the U.S. Treasury with "wall" in the memo.
Did you read the bill, Sean? I doubt that, as otherwise, you wouldn't claim such nonsense.
The bill aimed to address various aspects of U.S. immigration and border security. Here are the key provisions that were reportedly part of the bill:
1. Increased Border Funding: The bill proposed additional resources for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), including funding for more personnel, technology, and infrastructure at the southern border.
2. Asylum Process Overhaul: It aimed to streamline the asylum process, making it quicker for those with legitimate claims while expediting the removal of individuals who do not qualify for asylum.
3. DACA Protections: The bill included provisions for legalizing Dreamers under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, offering them a path to permanent residency.
4. Temporary Worker Program: The bill proposed the establishment of a guest worker program to meet labor demands in industries like agriculture, allowing immigrants to work legally in the U.S. on temporary visas.
5. Modernizing Immigration System: There were reforms targeting the legal immigration system to reduce backlogs and improve efficiency, including changes to family-based and employment-based immigration.
6. Enhanced Border Technology: It also proposed implementing modern surveillance technologies and upgrading existing infrastructure, such as sensors, drones, and cameras, to monitor the border more effectively.
If the bill would have been passed, America would have been much safer.
Even if what you say is true, can you honestly say that there's no warrant for skepticism. Isn't the implicit premise of this bill (as for previous "reforms"): okay, yeah, so we're not really enforcing the present laws very faithfully but, trust us, we (mostly the very same people) are gonna do a bang-up job with these new laws; we totally promise to get a handle on things this time... and, whatever you do, don't mention Sanctuary Cities.
I would have supported giving the bill a chance to succeed. However, we will never know its potential outcome because Trump, consistent with his approach, blocked its passage. This aligns with his tendency to avoid solving issues when he can instead use them to incite division and hatred among people.
I can't help but disagree. However thanks for the conversation. I hope you stick around-- admittedly in large part because I think that, if you keep reading Ayaan with any measure of attention, some of your opinions might change.
Thank you, Charles, for fostering a civil and respectful discussion. Regarding Ayaan, I have genuinely appreciated and resonated with several of her articles. However, it's disheartening to see that some of her recent writings appear aimed solely at swaying her readers to support Trump over Kamala. These articles seem to lack comprehensive research and present a heavily biased perspective. I hope she returns to writing balanced and well-rounded articles.
That so-called bipartisan border bill would have simply legitimized the border crisis, removed provisions in current law to protect our border, and allowed the invasion to continue. As another commenter said, read the bill. If you think choosing “joy” with Kamala is going to stop the border invasion, you are delusional. It will only get worse, much worse, if Kamala is elected. This administration created the border crisis…why would they stop it?
Kathleen, did you read the bill? From your comment, I can only conclude that you actually didn’t. Even if you had read it, you would have known that, in fact, the passage of that bill would have made America safer, made the border more secure, and treated people fairly and humanely while preserving legal immigration, consistent with American values. It included over $20 billion for border security to add more than 1,500 new Customs and Border Protection personnel and fund the installation of 100 cutting-edge inspection machines to help detect fentanyl at our Southwest Border ports of entry.
Therefore, the bill received support from the Border Patrol Union, the Chamber of Commerce, the South Texas Alliance of Cities, and the Wall Street Journal.
Sadly, Trump was more interested in using the border issue to divide the American people instead of fixing it.
Well at least the powers that be are talking about how destructive and stupid mass migration is. Just because the countries these migrants come from are hell holes is no reason for western countries to open their doors to all and sundry. How about governments take care of the people they have!
Jillian, for some reason I am not able to like your posts. Are you in some kind of trouble with Ayaan, or am I? :)
