20,000 thousand immigrants primarily from Haiti suddenly coming to a 60,000 community that has had a more or less homogeneous population for a while is bound to be unpopular. It wouldn't matter if it happened in Haiti itself.
One of the primary reasons Trump has risen politically is he addresses normal, unsophisticated, people's deep concerns about globalization. Immigration is at the top of those concerns.
America is truly a nation of immigrants. But nobody wants chaos. People want home to be home. They don't want to see it dissolve in a maelstrom of change.
Brilliant article that hits all the problems squarely. I find it interesting that Democrats are using the old Republican line about how the immigrants work better than the locals. Of course better means for lower wages and less fuss. For the locals, just give them some meth and leave them be (that work is contracted to the Mexican cartels)
Funny how the same folks who oppose any talk of illegal immigrants’ impact on crime rates and wage levels will talk endlessly about grave “threats to democracy” from the local plumber or truck driver sporting a MAGA hat. Or maybe not so funny.
Thank you for this well redeason thought peace on why regular people are so concerned about the rapid and dramatic changes to their communities brought on by sudden mass immigration from foreign cultures, not motivated to adopt the American way of life and values.
A nation that is swamped against its will with an illegal wave of immigration that undermines community cohesion will tear at the very fabric of who we are as a country. Managed immigration is fine and can be beneficial. Unmanaged chaos is, frankly, a crime. When is THAT trial going to occur?
In many Islamic countries political history of the 20th century has meant expelling or exterminating religious/ ethnic minorities in the hope of gaining their wealth. Why do people not think that an immigrant community might believe it is entitled to the wealth of this country if stirred by political or religious ideology?
Thank you for providing this article with such clarity and reason. American communities are forced to deal with this mess when they can hardly cut a break themselves. Haiti has been a disaster of ungoverned space and natural disasters compounding the problems. I don't doubt that anyone from Haiti would desperately want to flee and find refuge in America. But how do they know they can come here? What kind of messaging is happening in their countries to say how, when and where to go to fly to America for free? How long will the American people have to fund their living expenses?? It has proven to be a disaster for the American people. Anyone have a clue about who and how we will unscrew this mess? My guess is TRUMP!!
Uses our tax money to fly and support the illegal migrants. Also we should be aware that the lack of FEMA resources and people in states hit hard by Hurricane Helene is due to FEMA resources being used for illegal immigration.
I actually take a different take. The migrants *should* be allowed to move where they can find work, and *also* they should be held to the same legal standards as everyone else.
How did this stand become controversial? On the Left, they are pro-migrant to the point that immigrants are allowed to violate rights, commit crimes, and anyone who notices it and condemns this is held to be a racist. On the right, community exist as a force that can be used to block outsiders from working jobs and developers from building; actions that don't violate anyone's rights. The Left believes being poor and backwards somehow confers privilege, while the Right believes that tradition gives it privilege - I don't think the case that these are "outsiders" moving in, so they should be legally blocked, has quite the moral force they think it does.
Both seem to have abandoned what I think the West is really about, individual rights.
You missed the fact that all this immigration is being done with taxpayer money. The immigrants(illegal aliens) are now public charges. They will probably receive tax payer money for the duration. When America was a true immigrant nation, many , if not most returned to their native land because they could not make it. I personally am offended by the fact that these Illegal Aliens are receiving up to 4-5x the amount of money/benefits that I receive as a newly retired Social Security recipient. I have worked in America as a citizen of America, yet my tax dollars are being GIVEN to people who have broken our laws BY corrupt politicians( DEMOCRATS) without my consent.
In the article linked, it also said about homeless people in Ohio: "From 2007-2023, our state experienced one of the country's biggest drops in its overall number of people experiencing "chronic patterns of homelessness," per the report — 1,125 fewer people, or a nearly 49% drop." - so in comparison, 2023 is still much better than under Republican president George W. Bush.

Pelucid clarity. Depressing.
1. Provably bad facts surface
2. Party A complains in soundbites
3. Party B mocks Party A’s soundbites
4. Party A memes the mockery of Party B
5. TikTok dance videos
6. Media attacks Party A
7. Parties move farther apart and move on
8. Things gets worse
9. Repeat
